Honey- Not Just For Bees!

Updated: Dec 29, 2019

Let's talk honey. Since ancient times, it has been used as both a food and a medicine.

Honey is better for you that refined sugar, however it should still be used in moderation. It’s healing powers come from its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory compounds and many important antioxidants. Some studies have shown modest reductions in blood pressure and cholesterol levels from consuming honey.

Topical honey treatment can be used to heal wounds and burns. It can also be an effective treatment for diabetic foot ulcers. One study reported a 43.3% success rate with honey as a wound treatment. In another study, topical honey healed a whopping 97% of patients’ diabetic ulcers. It can help treat other skin conditions, including psoriasis.

While honey may be slightly better than refined sugar for people with diabetes, it should still be consumed with caution.

Keep in mind, too, that certain types of honey may be adulterated with plain syrup. Although honey adulteration is illegal in most countries, it remains a widespread problem. So make sure you buy a good quality brand of raw honey, organic is best. Enjoy!
