Prevention With Olive Oil

Let’s look at one of major health benefits of extra virgin olive oil.

Abnormal clotting inside a blood vessel is a critical factor in heart attack and ischemic stroke. The medical term for this is thrombosis. Including extra virgin olive oil with our meals may help prevent formation of these deadly blood clots.

In a series of preclinical experiments, olive oil boosted production of a component of HDL (good cholesterol) called apoA-IV. This helps protect against platelet aggregation (clumping of our blood cells) that can cause heart attacks caused by coronary artery blockage and ischemic strokes.

Extra virgin is the highest grade of olive oil. As with all virgin olive oils, it is made mechanically, without the use of chemicals or excessive heat. When choosing one the type of bottle matters.

The three enemies of olive oil are light, heat, and air so choose a brand that has a dark bottle, preferably glass and store it in a cool dry place out of the light. Also, pay attention to the best buy date. And make sure to only buy oil labeled extra-virgin.

According to the US FDA, consuming 2 tablespoons per day will certainly do you good, in many ways. You can enjoy it drizzled on your sandwich, bread, salad, soup or cheese or get creative and find your own favorite ways to enjoy it. Your body will thank you!
